Behind a simple “I don’t know,” “I can’t remember,” or “It wasn’t me” may lie uncertainty, fear, defensiveness, missing context or critical information that has yet to surface. For investigators, the real challenge is not simply asking more questions. It is knowing what to observe, what to probe, when to challenge and how to navigate resistance without compromising neutrality, professionalism, or procedural fairness.
What Lies Beneath the Answer is an intensive 2-day practical masterclass designed to strengthen the complete investigative journey; from the moment an incident or allegation is first reported to the point where evidence, interviews, statements and findings must support a sound and defensible decision. When investigations go wrong, evidence can be lost, memories fade, emotions cloud the facts, employees become defensive and critical disclosures may be poorly captured. Weak statements create loopholes, and an investigation that appeared strong can ultimately unravel when disciplinary action is taken.
This masterclass equips participants to take greater control and confidence at every stage; securing critical evidence, establishing reliable facts, assessing escalation and police reporting considerations, analysing verbal and non-verbal behaviour and applying established investigative interviewing and interrogation techniques to navigate denial, defensiveness, reluctance and resistance. Participants will also strengthen their ability to elicit and document reliable statements, distinguish admissions from confessions, use AI-assisted documentation tools responsibly and connect evidence and interviews to defensible findings, stronger show cause processes, appropriate due process, and better-informed disciplinary decisions.
Through realistic investigation scenarios, behavioural observation exercises, interactive debates, role-plays, strategic questioning, statement analysis and show cause letter reviews, participants will experience investigation as one connected journey.
